Robert Hauschild
United States
Robert Hauschild learned his technical painting skills at an early age. Although Bob considers himself to be largely self-taught, it is important to
note that his father, a successful Manhatten based commercial artist, often worked
in his home studio. Bob had full access to paint, paper and brushes...a kid in a candy shop!
Bob's childhood playground was the land of the Hudson River with the ferries,
tugs, railroads, bridges and lighthouses. It is no wonder that his favorite paintings would one day include what he knew,
saw and enjoyed as a child.
Bob paints mostly in watercolor and acrylic. He has spent nearly all of his adult life along the shoreline of Long Island
Sound. The hallmarks of his paintings are hard edges, dramatic shadows and stark contrasts
between dark and light falling upon the surface of the canvas. His work has been described as surreal and mystical, both in style and subject.
Four of Bob's watercolor paintings have been reproduced as award winning posters
for the New London Main Steet Organization. Two examples of his works appear on the cover and backplate of the current Historic
Waterfront Distict Map and Guide of New London, CT. For the past eight years, Bob has been the cover artist of Locomotive Quarterly. In addition to his work being represented by Catalyst Art Galleries, his paintings
are also on exhibit at the Mystic Arts Center, The Trade Winds Gallery in Mystic
and The Empress of Art in New London.
Bob has had solo shows at the Mystic Arts Center, The Slater Art Museum and the
Alexey von Schlippe Gallery of Art. He has participated in many group shows and his paintings have won numerous
awards. He is in the permanent collections of the Alexey Von Schlippe Gallery of Art,
the Mystic Arts Center, the Mystic Seaport and the New London branch office of
Chelsea Groton Bank. Bob also teaches art privately at the Mystic Arts Center and for the New London
and Old Saybrook Adult Education programs.
